Letter From an Aceh Volunteer
I have seen with my own eyes that our Orphans still deal with stress and trauma caused by the Tsunami that hit Aceh over a year ago.
Right after the Tsunami it was constantly on TV for the whole world to view, but for the victims, it was almost surreal.
Only now are they truly beginning to awake to the horrors, having nightmares and calling out to their deceased parents in their sleep.
Maisarah is one of our Orphans at IHF, and has had to stay in the hospital twice because she cannot move her legs, and has trouble breathing. She was forced under by the water, and smashed by all of the other objects mixed in the tumble. She blacked out for two days, and was in a comma in a huge electric power ship. They thought she was dead, and tossed her in with the dead bodies, causing her to become covered in zinc. She was discovered to be alive, and treated in Medan before she came to our orphanage.
I have dedicated my time to helping them be happy. I have built them a swing set, teeter totter (see saw), a volleyball court and basketball court in order to help them enjoy themselves.
Then one day, we were all going to the beach to swim when an earthquake hit. They all began to cry and shake because of the trauma this brought upon them. However, they are starting to become happy and enjoy themselves and are even eager to go back to the water to swim and fish. They have truly become a family to one another, treating each other like brothers and sisters. We also have Abu, Ernilis, Nur, and Ayahanda who have helped them through everything and loved them every step of the way.
You have given these children a life again. No matter how hard I could work, I wouldn't be able to earn enough money to support this orphanage. We know that there are even more children in need, but helping these children is a huge step in the right direction. They go to visit other children and help teach them because our children believe in the IHF system of PASS IT ON. Without your support, this orphanage would not be able to continue.
We would also like to thank all of the people from our country who volunteer with our children even though so much of their lives were destroyed by the Tsunami, and those in our community who provide rice and small gifts for our loving children
I am really thankful to Marc and Elia for coming to visit our project and share the joy with our children. It means so much to them, and we hope that many of you reading this will come to visit us also.
We really need volunteers to teach them English and basic computer skills, and who will support them like a family and help make the children happy. All that they ask is that you hold them and love.

Testimonial from Nayereh, Banda Aceh 2009
In my sincere attempt to simply reflect on my experience volunteering at the IHF Banda Aceh Center, I must clearly state that I've been given an ample view on the thirst for knowledge, both in hopes to give and to receive. The continuous efforts and sacrifices given by all volunteers, forwarding their knowledge, has given me a lasting impression -- That IHF is here to make changes.
I've been fortunate enough to live at the Banda Aceh center for one month and understand a new value of family. While walking the border between teacher, friend and sister, I am now able to see the true importance of extending yourself to others. I will always remember my time as a member of the Banda Aceh family with fondness and hope to incorporate the lessons I've learned while staying at the center into my every day life, in the continuous search for knowledge.
