Medan

We are determined to help these poor children to be the next great leaders, by empowering them and teaching them to PASS IT ON

IHF Medan specializes in helping the poorest of the poor that come from many tribes, which are now living in inner city poverty. Some of the people we help are often single mothers (father deceased) who work as house maids, pedi-cab-man ( who earn money by driving passengers in their tricycle) and other laborers who make below living wages. They only make their little amount of money on days that they can find customers.

Medan does not have an Orphanage because Medan is the central office for all of Indonesia IHF Centers and is also very full with about 150 wonderful students that we love and teach English, Math and computer.

These children and all of our IHF Medan Team are striving to improve our English so we can communicate with you and the world. Our total of about 500 students come from the poorest of the poor that need certificate (degree) to support in helping them to compete for jobs.

There are many tribes in Medan City such as: Bataknese, Javanese, Melayunese, Acehnese and Padang. The tribes that we have mentioned are majority in Medan, but there are tens of other tribes. My wife is Acehnese, which is also why we are so involved in helping victims from the Tsunami.

All you women out there will love Padang because it is Matriarchal, meaning that women rule (only Women can inherit, own land, keep all in divorce)!!!

In Medan, our Goal is to train teachers in motivating our shy students to NOT be afraid to ask questions, speak publicly, to think creatively, and reach for new heights.

Today the students had to fill in the blanks with likes and dislikes...some made some very bad errors but most did well. In the other class we went over tenses past, present future...not easy. Glad I had Joey to help me with the translating. Much more work is needed. Next week I guess.

In today's class we started writing dialogue for our oldest kids and had them write using as many verbs as possible. Next class we will go over corrections and then present! I feel I've got a long way with these students and they will do well in the future. Mike talked with Abi about starting a scholarship program for poor kids in Indonesia. Looks like a great opportunity.

Today classes were as usual with lots of children, and we had the children present what they liked best about school. It was a great class. Today was Parin's last day and so to celebrate he took the staff and some of his new Medan friends out to Pizza Hut. Everyone was sad to see Parin go because he is so alive and so giving.

Saturday 19th, December 2009

Today the internet connection collapsed. Alia couldn't do the international hours. So she did her local hours all day, cleaned the center, washed all the bed sheets and prepared all drafts for sponsor letters. Then Ari came and tried to fix the internet. Luckily he got it fixed then Alia started the international hours.
