IHF Thailand

The International Humanity Foundation Thailand branch works with the hilltribes, the indigenous people living in the tumultuous borderlands between Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), and Laos, and extending as far as into China and Vietnam. The two tribes at our Children's Home are Lahu and Akha. The hilltribes in Northern Thailand face many challenges, and it is our mission to arm our children with the skills, attitudes and character that they will need to have equal opportunities for their future, like other Thai citizens.

Our home has 21 children. At home, they speak Lahu and Akha to their tribesmen and Thai when speaking across tribes. Most of our children are Christian, with several Buddhist exceptions, both religions being accepted.

Education: Our children range from (third grade) to Matayom four (12th grade) and go to four different schools. Each night we have one hour of homework time, during which we encourage the older children to help the younger children practice their Thai language skills. Also, we are always looking for volunteers to teach English skills during this hour, and play with and help look after the kids.

Our Home: Situated on the outskirts of Chiang Rai town, our home enjoys the quiet of being at the end of the road, but is still close to town. We back up to a forest where the children like to play. Our neighbors are friendly, and own a candy store that our children often visit. We have boys and a girls dorms, joined by a common area, where we eat our meals, and the children do their homework.

Staff: Volunteers are always needed and so very welcome to come and stay with us. We have various volunteers coming and going, staying around 1-3 months. The volunteers help out in the home, help with homework, do some administrative work and make sure it all runs smoothly. Even more important is just playing with the children, helping them practice their English and making sure they are happy.

At the moment we only have one housemother, nabee. She is a single mother with a daughter, niece, and nephew who also live at the center and receive and education. Nabee often sings with the kids and helps them retain their Lahu heritage. She also does the sewing for the children.

Please visit often and read our news, and if you're ever in Northern Thailand, and would like to volunteer please email volunteering@ihfonline.org

Today started with the kids watching the end of Alvin and the Chipmunks (dubbed) since last night they had to stop it since it ran too late. After lunch, everyone pitched in and helped to clean up the center, including their rooms and picking up outside. Kelly and Pratya went to the market to take advantage of the coupons received yesterday for school uniforms, and after Pratya taught class again.

Saturday 22nd, May 2010

Kelly, Pratya, and all thirteen primary students left for school at 8:00 for the meetings. Kelly watched as the children played at first while Pratya attended a long meeting regarding the school rules, uniforms, and other useful information. When the meeting concluded, they all went classroom to classroom exchanging contact information with the teachers, receiving supplies and uniform coupons, and additional requirements. The directors met to discuss the rigorous class schedule they will be implementing at the center and Pratya’s desire to be more involved, starting today. After, Pratya taught a class about basic Thai language written and spoken to the kids and then they rented movies again.

Nabee left this morning to spend a couple days in her village, so Shanie and Kunu went on the market run in preparation for a busy Saturday. The weather is changing as well with scattered rain showers all day today hinting at the approaching monsoon season. This also means in increase in the insect population, some of which are very sweet cooked up, or so the kids say. After dinner we had a family meeting to discuss parent-teacher meetings in the morning and that the primary students need to go to school for it as well. Then the children were excited for some supervised internet time and watched two movies, then settled in between 10 – 10:30 for the night.

Thursday 20th, May 2010

Anchalee hadn’t returned to 100% yet, so she stayed home from school for the day resting and spending time with Kelly. Meanwhile, Kelly and Shanie had a busy day sending the sponsor letters off correctly for review and Skype-ing with Carol in the evening. The children are slowly getting back into their school day routine with homework right after school and finishing as much as they can before dinner, helping each other out if need be.

Wednesday 19th, May 2010

Today started off as a regular day with getting everyone off to school, but then the center received a call after lunch that Anchalee wasn’t feeling well. Kelly went to school to pick her up and while she was pretty sick at first, after taking medicine and resting, she perked up in the evening. The rest of the students came home at 4:00 and did their homework right away with help from some of the older kids, followed by dinner, and then their baseball game outside in the field.

Tuesday 18th, May 2010

We received word early this morning that Chuchart’s uncle passed away, so Jahae took Chuchart went to his village for the day. Jahae attends a different school that only has class on the weekends so he didn’t miss school and was great for supporting his friend at this time of loss. Shanie & Nabee went to the market in the morning, and after dinner there was a family meeting to further discuss school starting logistics and supplies. Everyone was in their rooms shortly after 8:00 to quiet down for the evening.

Monday 17th, May 2010

Today is the first day of high school so everyone was up early. Our truck is currently out of commission and the high school is across the Super Highway so the kids are taking a taxi-truck to school when we’re able to budget it in. The house is now very quiet during the daytime, but livens up at 4:00 when everyone returns from school. Since Demetra has finished training Kelly and Shanie, she left this morning to go to the Bali IHF center. We were all sad to see her go, but happy that she was able to give so much time to fully train the new directors well.
