The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) was founded in 1984 by Carol Sasaki. In the year 2000 it split into two parts:
(A) The Rescuing of trafficked and severely abused children, and housing in hidden safe transition homes. This is called SAVE, is in eleven countries, allows no volunteers and no publicity and is privately funded since 1985.
(B) The Prevention and Educational programs called IHF (International Humanity Foundation). IHF actively seeks the help of Volunteers from around the world as well as locally. These Volunteers are in a very intensive "IHF schooling" during their time of working with us and learning about the many layered problems of running an NGO that seeks to prevent the abuse of children while providing these children schooling , leadership training, and as needed Housing, nutritional and medical help for the children and communities.
You have been accepted as a Work Study Volunteer in IHF and it is our hope that you will learn much about the culture and about the complex laws and realities of small non profit projects such as ours.
Today, IHF is comprised of seven locations in Thailand , Kenya, Indonesia & the United States helping more than 3,000 children worldwide month after month, year after year. IHF is a unique organization in that all those involved at any level consider themselves to be members of the IHF family. We wish to extend that warm welcome to you.
Please read the following statements to signify your understanding and acceptance of the terms presented.
General Rules
1. I have read and understood the IHF mission statement. This is a mission statement that I endorse and will work to support.
2. I have read and understood the information on IHF's website, http://www.ihfonline.org, especially that which pertains to overseas volunteers.
3. In addition to making sure I read and understand this MOU, and browsing the IHF website, I will review the attached Centre Manual and Teacher training manual before arriving at my assigned IHF Center. I understand this is helpful in preparing for my volunteer term.
4. I understand that by volunteering at an IHF center, I am being invited into a family. That family is run according to local custom and culture. It is important for me to respect local culture and understand that although I may not agree with some aspects of the culture, I am not at the center to make any changes but to help, support and love the children and their community.
5. I fully agree to abide by the strict IHF policy of no smokers, no alcohol drinking, no sexual/romantic activities, no swearing, no violence, no theft. I understand that IHF runs Childrens Homes and Schools and these activities are, of course, not appropriate examples for our children.
6. I am now sending, or have already sent, my email accepting this position and committing to sending the non refundable deposit of $75.00 that applies toward my first week at the center.
7. I understand that as soon as I send in this Confirmation of my acceptance; the IHF Acceptance team will then send me my own IHF emailbox and teach me how to use it. I will always use my new IHF email for all IHF matters.
8. I understand that all IHF information about my trip preparations will be sent to my new IHF Member email box. I understand that its use is in order to keep my private mailbox private and from over filling my personal mailbox at anytime. I understand that I will be taught how to use it.
( NOTE: *** Be sure to let us know if you have any trouble getting into your mailbox. Many do have problems at first if not familiar with google mailboxes- and we are more than happy to help you.)
What if I need to cancel or change my dates?
9. I understand that the $ 75.00. Confirmation deposit is non refundable if I cancel my trip. But once paid, it may be applied to a future date, time, or IHF Center if I am for any reason unable to arrive at the center as planned. I understand that the Center and its children count on my arrival so prior notice is important and appreciated unless a last minute personal situation in my life for some reason prevents this.
10. I understand that at the same time I am contacted by the Travel team, I will also be sent my twelve hours pre trip OOTT task instructions, by TTP (task team placement) along with my chosen IHF Centers Director.
11. I understand that IHF will immediately provide me with my Center Directors name and email, and skype and phone number.
( NOTE : Feel free to email or phone your Centers Directors about anything at any time!)
12. I understand that The Center Directors are my own "Personal IHF Guides" and it is their job to help me and answer all questions I may have.
13. I understand the Director of Volunteer Processing is also delighted to answer any questions I have at anytime.
14. I understand I may also call the USA office at (1-760-917-2440) and leave a message to speak to Volunteers there.
( NOTE: If you have Skype and would like to Video Skype with the Children and Staff at the Center you are going to, please feel free to do so. Your Centers Director will arrange this with you, as well as putting you in touch with another present or past Work Study Volunteer if you would like this.)
15. I will be in frequent email contact Director of the center in which I will be working (see below), immediately upon sending in this MOU, to introduce myself as well as arrange arrival plans.
16. I understand that prior to my departing home to arrive at the IHF Center, I must email again with the Director of the IHF Center I am going to: confirming my arrival date and time as well as confirming the teams that TTP has assigned me to during my stay at the center.
17. I understand that obtaining a visa, if and when necessary, is my own responsibility. IHF will provide me with a supporting letter and information needed to acquire said visa, and do its best to answer my questions. IHF Travel Team
NOTE: Be sure to consider not just the small weekly fee but also your own personal air ticket and any ground safaris/ sightseeing/ transport/ and gifts and phone calls for friends back home that you may wish to spend money on. We ask this, so you do not expect us to pay out of our children's limited donations, as we can not.
18. I understand that all guests. ( Including my family if visiting) need permission to enter Carol's IHF homes and can not simply enter, nor stay, without this permission.
19. I understand that doing my twelve pre trip hours is expected before my arrival. I understand that the TTP and OOTT team Directors will be right there for me if I have any problem in doing my pre trip task.
20. I understand that at the completion of my 12 pre-trip hours on OOTT, I will receive a certificate of completion.
I understand I need this certificate of Completion of Pre Trip hours before I can arrive at the IHF centre as a Work Study Volunteer, on the agreed upon date.
I will dedicate twelve hours of online IHF work prior to my departure. I understand I will not be allowed to arrive at the center without completing these 12 hours and the IHF Certificate of completion that verifies this.
I understand that my work on the OOTT task teams for these 12 hours is a way in which IHF can judge my ability to follow instructions and complete tasks and communicate with others while maintaining a positive attitude-essential to working at our centers and with other cultures.
I understand it is important that I start on these twelve pre-trip hours with the Oott team and Craiglist team, as soon as I receive these instructions for the twenty five postings on each team. If a delay is needed in doing the twelve pre trip hours, I will request it of TTP and OOTT in writing.
21. I understand that these terms and the simple pre trip task will be explained to me and I will be trained until comfortable in doing it, rather than overwhelmed. I understand I am able to ask any question at anytime. I understand I may request a different pre trip task at anytime.
22. I understand that I am never allowed to represent myself as an employee of IHF nor write and send out emails representing IHF without the permission of my Team Director, or Center Director or IHF Founder.
23. All emails must be sent out from IHF mailboxes that have been set up for all tasks and never from my personal mailbox. To do so is grounds for dismissal.
24. I understand that I need to copy all IHF emails I send to Copy
(IHF is a growing family and many of the volunteers are quite new to the foundation. It is vital that emails are copied to avoid misunderstandings and mistakes being made. In addition, during my initial training period, any emails I send out about IHF to anyone, must first be approved by my Center or Team Director or Carol Sasaki. The goal is to have well trained Volunteers and task teams).
25. I will fill out the pre-volunteering survey before I arrive at my center. I will complete my post-volunteering survey within one month of finishing my overseas work. These surveys will be provided to me upon my confirming my acceptance with IHF.
26. I understand that my IHF Centers Volunteer Manual and my IHF Centers Director can help me in many issues such as what to pack, weather, environment , etc. I will read the manual and not be shy to ask questions.
27. I understand that all international flights usually allow 60 to 70 Kg and some more. I will pack for myself minimally, as to maximum the amount of donations I can bring for the children. Most centers have many very inexpensive markets nearby where I can buy anything I could need for myself, so bringing excess clothing, etc. for myself is often unnecessary.
28. I understand that it is much appreciated if I bring donated items/used supplies with me to the center and work with IHF on what these items will be. Always needed are school supplies, old cameras, laptops and desktop computer bases, and if I manage to bring such items to the center it would be a great achievement in my work for IHF. Other helpful items are used tape recorders, all small electronics, medicines, clothes and " English as a second language" along with other learning materials or children books, childrens movie discs and music.
29. I will do my best to post the attached poster around my town, at my place of work, club/cafe etc. This poster is seeking used donated laptops and cameras. If one of each is donated before I leave, I will bring these used items with me, as all IHF Centers and their Communities are always in great need of these.
Posters for used laptops and cameras that are helpful to us if you post and can bring with you if someone in your community sees these posters and donates their old ones. It works and is very helpful. (Our Centers and their communities are always in great need of these).
Upon Arrival:
30. I understand that I need to check in with Carol Sasaki and Donated Hours Team by emailing Donated Hours Team upon my arrival at the IHF center where I will be staying.
31. I understand that the Director or a representative of the director of the center in which I will be working will pick me up at the airport/bus station where I arrive. However, I realize that all costs of transportation to and from the IHF center are my responsibility. (In Bali and Jakarta, you will need to take a taxi which will be between USD $20.00 and USD $30.00. At the remainder of the centers, the cost will be USD $15.00 or less if Transport is needed).
32. I understand that upon arrival at my center, I must provide the director with the following documents:
33. I understand that the accommodation provided for volunteers is often shared and very simple. Some centers do not have hot water or western toilets.
34. I will make sure my center has western toilets and A/C in the shared Volunteers room if this is essential to me, and request to be transferred to a center that does if it does not, and I will be upset by its not.
35. If I find that I prefer daily A/C use , I will pay an additional 15.00 dollars a week to cover this cost as it is quite expensive and will take from the childrens tight budget if I do not cover my use.
36. I am prepared to live as the children and directors live at the centers. I realize that the center cannot change to suit my personal needs and am willing to adapt to my surroundings (for example in Muslim Banda Aceh, I will never go outside the center without wearing the local head cover provided.)
37. At every center, local customs do not permit unmarried couples to sleep together, share a room, or show public displays of affection. I understand this may affect me. If my partner and I do not come introduced as a married couple and that our sleeping arrangements, and any public show of affection will be affected by this, but am willing to adjust for the sake of respecting the culture I am volunteering in.
38. I understand that my provided meals will be local food. I realize that I will be eating the same food as the children at my center. I understand that if this food is not suitable for me, it is my own responsibility to buy and/or cook food that is to my liking (often, food will be spicy.
(NOTE: If you have a vegetarian diet, you may find it difficult to eat provided food at some locations and want to supplement with additional foods you buy when at market).
39. I further understand that the water used at the centers is boiled local water. I will buy my own bottled water, if need be, at a local market. I will not eat my special foods in front of the children unless sharing. I will eat them privately. (This is especially important with sweet drinks and snacks! Please be sensitive in this way.)
40. I understand the importance of teaching English to the children at these centers, and am willing to prepare for and teach English lessons at the IHF center where I will be living. While learning another language happens naturally, I will focus not on their teaching me their language, but more on my teaching them English. While English does not need to be my first language, teaching it daily will be one measure of my success. I understand that being a teacher is not necessary and the classes are informal and fun.
(NOTE: Many volunteers are scared about teaching when they first arrive and start, many having no experience teaching : only to truly love teaching and the children shortly).
41. I understand that as a work study Volunteer, I am pledging to do my International teams four online hours daily and the centers four local hours with the children and community daily.
42. I understand that all volunteers at all centers help in taking photos and helping children to write thank you letters in their own words to their sponsors.
43. I understand that IHF is a grass roots organization. Any money that the center spends on a volunteer is money taken away from the children's budget.
44. I understand that IHF accepts Volunteers young and old and needs and Values the help they offer: But IHF must maintain rules that must be followed. Again I note that I will strictly abide by the IHF policy of no smokers, no alcohol drinking, no sexual activities, no swearing, no violence, no theft, no aggressive fighting. I understand that IHF runs Childrens Homes and Schools and these activities are of course, not appropriate examples for our children at our centers and not acceptable in their culture.
45. I understand that if I am found to be in repeated violation of the most critical rules & procedures, I will be sent a reminder letter. If I continue to violate IHF's rules and procedures, I will be asked to leave. If the grievance is great: I will be asked to leave immediately.
46. I understand that once at the IHF Centre , all volunteers will have a one week probation period upon arrival at the center, where they will be evaluated by the centre children and Director. If any person is deemed as obviously Violent, abusive and not safe with the children, or the children are fearful for any reason, they will be asked to leave.
47. I understand this does not happen often, but sadly has happened in several rare cases of drunkenness we simply never tolerate.
48. I understand that as all IHF Centers are either Children's Homes or Children's school/ community centers: Our gates are locked at 9:30 pm curfew time and anyone arriving after that time will need to find another place to sleep for the night. No exceptions made. For folks wanting to come to a place where they plan to go out partying late at bars at night: IHF's Children Homes and Centers are not appropriate places for you to Volunteer. Also please note if going to Bali: we recommend not doing a work study there as this is our least busy center removed from any city and from very poor areas because our Center is located in our Founders ex-vacation home. We have a far greater need for work study students at all our other Indonesian Centers.
49. I understand the importance of all the rules being followed in an organization such as IHF where they maintain a very safe and secure, wonderful environment, while dealing day in and day out with so many people in need and from such widely different backgrounds and cultures. I understand that IHF allows no drinking of alcohol during my stay, in order to assure their environment respects the culture, the children and maintains its safe, beautiful environment.
****Please Note: Another example is our strictness about the four hours online international work that all Work study Volunteers do daily along with all IHF Directors. If you would rather not help the Directors in this, it is recommended that you come as a Voluntourist "Vacationer" instead. As a Work-Study Student, you are coming not only to help but for learning also and the amount to be learned can be overwhelming at times. We are not the right organization if you are coming wishing to just sleep and vacation: "I just want to hang out at bars, party etc."
You will be disappointed if this is what you are looking for. We are not simply a "cheap place to hang out".
All our volunteers, young and old, are much needed and work hard eight hours a day, sometimes more, as do all our Directors and staff. This includes the four hours teaching and playing with the children/community daily, and the four hours international work online daily with the Directors.
If this is not for you, then coming as a Voluntourist (four local hours a day mandatory only) may be preferable to you.
Our structure and our sometimes non linear way of doing things comes from many, many years of experience. We are confident you will respect the rules and respect the culture you will be working and living with.
50. I understand that IHF & all the children at our centers treasure my help very dearly & are grateful for all the time & work that I give to volunteering for IHF! I understand that once an IHF alumni at one center, all IHF centers and children are family and they welcome me. I will keep in contact at least several times a year with others in my home country and province or state that are interested in IHF, offering advice to the best of my ability.
We want this to be an utterly amazing, wonderful and meaningful experience for you and for you to not be disappointed in any manner or to feel you were not told something clearly.
Even though your days may often be long hours, children laughing and yelling all over, and cultural challenges galore,(whether it is the weather or the language barriers, the International teams, or other daily demands)--- even though all this is always a part of Volunteering and difficult at times: The rewards are deep and lasting we are told again and again.
We very much want our IHF Work Study Volunteers to feel this was one of the most valuable and treasured life experiences they have ever had.
Please submit to us the following statement, if true:
I pledge that I have read this MOU and agree to follow the IHF rules.
Thank you so much for your Volunteering with us. Our children will be eager and delighted, as are we!
